Pancakes aren’t just for Shrove Tuesday. In fact Pancakes are delicious all year round and eating them in the shadow of The Shard is flipping amazing. Shrove Tuesday is the annual day in which people attempt to whip up pancakes for their loved ones but usually end up with a ceiling full of pancake mixture instead! This day originated as pancakes were an effective way of using up the remainder of your fats and eggs before taking on the challenge of the Lenten fasting period leading up to Easter. Nowadays, Pancake Day is mainly an excuse to overindulge because lets face it, everything is better with pancakes. Recently, pancakes have become a more luxurious treat with restaurants going above and beyond to create the perfect treat. We are all looking forward to restrictions easing and we want you to be prepared to eat as many pancakes as you can once they do. So with this in mind, here are the best places to munch on a big stack of pancakes in the shadow of the Shard:
Where The Pancakes Are:
This bright venue squeezed into a corner of Flat Iron Square- unsurprisingly – is a restaurant serving lots of pancakes. The variety on this menu is certainly something to get excited over; from pancakes thrilling sweet tooths to savoury constructions for cheese lovers this restaurant has it all. They also provide yummy alternatives for those with intolerances, they can whip up vegan, dairy and wheat free batter. The view from this restaurant is what makes it though, overlooking The Shard get your pancake fix before venturing to The View from The Shard to admire London’s finest view. Be sure to try out their ‘Dutch Babies’ which resembles a giant Yorkshire pudding, oozing with delicious fillings. You don’t have to wait until re-opening to get your pancake fix however as they are currently providing pancake takeaway boxes.
The Breakfast Club London Bridge:
This American-inspired restaurant often attracts large queues, however it is more than worth the wait. Their team are experts when it comes to making pancakes and in 2019 alone served up 928,000 fluffy pancakes (which, if stacked up, would reach our open air sky deck level of The Shard… thirty times). Their eccentric décor makes it a fun and instagrammable spot! They have branches across London, but our favourite is based in London Bridge a small walk away from The Shard!
Based within The Hoxton, this trendy and cool brunch spot is a fantastic place to visit at any time of the day and they are especially praised for their mouth watering pancakes. Taking inspiration by the flavours of the French and Italian Rivieras, their all day breakfast menu evokes a sunny holiday feeling- much needed for all of us who are dreaming of a summer getaway!
Gunpowder, Tower Bridge:
If you’re looking for a brunch with a twist, this is the place to go. With multiple Indian twists on brunch classics, Gunpowder provide a weekend brunch menu filled with Indian spices and delicious banana pancakes. If you wish to make your bunch boozy, you can wash it all down with one of their signature cocktails.
London’s Borough Market is one of the more famous food markets in the capital. For hundreds of years, Borough Market has been the centre of London’s food trade. Selling gourmet street food as well as raw products such as fresh vegetables and mouth-watering cheeses. Located just minutes away from The Shard it is easy to lose a few hours being mesmerised by the offerings at this top gourmet market. Fingers crossed that in 2022, their annual pancake race, whereby regular Borough Market traders will be serving up piles of pancakes, will return bigger and better than ever!
We look forward to welcoming you back to London Bridge as soon as its safe to do so. But for now, if you’d excuse us we are going to go have pancakes with a side of pancakes! Be sure to enter our Pancake Day competition on our Facebook channel, how many pancakes stack up to be the size of The Shard? Closest guess will win an annual pass that they can activate post lockdown. Good luck!
