Last week, we were featured in series three of BBC’s Amazing Hotels, a programme looking at stunning hotels worldwide. Whilst this episode predominantly focused upon the Shangri La Hotel, based on level 35, hosts Giles Coren and Monica Galetti also visited our viewing gallery situated 37 levels higher up than the hotel. They marvelled at the difference between the views and the way The Shard dwarfs other skyscrapers such as the Canary Wharf and the city cluster. Throughout this series, both Giles and Monica visit some of the world’s most extraordinary hotels, and complete various jobs within these hotels to experience first hand how they operate. This programme only relies on one thing, the hotel and the building both being exceptional.
This episode begins with both Giles and Monica questioning the value of The Shard and what it represents to Londoners. London has more 5 star hotels then everywhere else in the world, however the Shard is evidently London’s most visible one. Giles expressed his dismay when the Shard was first built, he described it as having a rather corporate feel. It was promising to see, following his visit, how his perspective of our 310m skyscraper, designed by Renzo Piano, had changed massively and he had fallen in love with both the building and the view.
The programme covered all areas from the impressive way our lifts operate to discussions about the architecture of the Shard and the stunning scenery you can view of our beloved city.
